Chats on the Farmhouse Porch- No way! Chat inside today. Brrr...

Hello friends. Just like last week, if you can pick up the code for the Chats button from a previous chat then you can post it. The good news on the computer front is the email that I got saying I would get parts for my laptop before the end of the week. Yay!In the meantime, this borrowed computer will allow the chat to go on.

Welcome to the porch. Let's get inside before we freeze! No, Wendell. You have to stay outside. Bummer! I haven't been part of chats for the last few weeks, and now I am excluded. I just don't want you in the house. YOU come into my house. What do you have to say about that? Wendell, I love you, but you aren't housebroken, and you don't know how to wipe your feet on the doormat. I promise you can be part of the chat next time we are on the porch. Can't you just leave the window open and I will stick my head in. Not this time, buddy. It is Polar Bear weather out there today. Wen? Honey, come back. There aren't really bears out there. Wendell?
  1. Have you tried any DIY cleaning products or skin care products from the many recipes on the internet?
  2. Do you like to enter sweepstakes, giveaways, or prize drawings?
  3. How often do you visit your local library? Do you have a local library?
  4. Do you have a simple mobile phone or one that does lots of things?
  5. Tell me something new or interesting. Please:)
My answers:
  1. Yes. I make my own laundry detergent from a recipe I learned two or three years ago. I tried a drain cleaner, but wasn't too thrilled. I am able to get my stainless steel appliances shiny with coconut or olive oil and polishing. I also make my own toothpaste.
  2. Sometime, but only if it looks legitimate. I like raffle tickets at local events if it is for a good cause.
  3. At least once a week. The library is a short drive.
  4. I have a plain cell phone. It even makes calls- when the sun is in the right place and I'm standing facing Pittsburgh or the North Pole. And I must be wearing striped socks or I might as well forget the whole thing! What an excellent phone plan we have!:P
  5. I felted three sweaters and I am making fingerless gloves. I love shrinking things on purpose. I have practiced for many years, before felting became popular. Maybe I can post photos when I have that ability again. Oh, I meant to tell you that we have two new lambs that were born today. I heard about it after I got home from a trip to the city today. I haven't seen them yet.. I hope to tomorrow.
Have a good week!

Baby it's cold outside!

It feels strange to write a post with no photos. I have taken many. I even went outside in six degree to photograph bubbles. I have to remember to use cold for my bubble water next time. The warmer water made them even more determined to pop. There are great photos when the weather is this extreme, but I cannot share them. I am still on a borrowed computer. The same borrowed computer that took the media card from my camera, started in some motion I still don't understand, and emptied the card. It then told me that the file was empty. So, now I just shoot photos. I will max out the media card and share them when my computer gets better. I ordered parts. Soon, I hope!

Wendell and his friends have spent a great deal of time out in the bitter cold. They have a shelter they can go to, but they would rather be "guys" and tough it out. They are eating far more hay than usual. Along with the clever, but bratty pony, the big horses have gotten out of their pasture twice now. I expect them at the front door any day now. As if the farmer's boots weren't messy enough...

I've been busy crafting. What have you been doing this week? I took my sewing machine out to make my youngest a sock monkey. She is in bed with a cold, so the monkey will wait. In the meantime, I am making stuffed toys. I'd love to share a picture, but you know about that silly computer. Blah!

I love to pick vegetables from our big greenhouse when the weather is nasty. It is usually warm and the soil smells lovely. The plants make me think of warmer weather. This last week was an exception. I decided to pick in our huge high tunnel the day that this snow started. There wasn't any blue in the sky, and the sun was nowhere to be found. It was very cold and the plants begged me to put the row covers back on them and go away. A bit of salad left with me. It was covered with snow by the time I got back to the house.

D4's bunny is in a small kennel in the office. Even her hutch would not keep her warm enough. One of our young ewes decided to live on the wild side. She gave birth during the coldest time we've had so far. C.S.Farmer put mama and the baby in his truck. They were a bit nervous, but happy to be able to get warm. They calmed down a lot when D3 turned on classical music. The are in a safe shed with a warming light. It's right next door to the runt piglets I am raising (the Squiglets). I like being able to peek in on mama and baby. I love sheep.

I hope everyone has a good weekend. Please be safe and warm. If you are not living in a similar climate, then please ignore the "warm" part. Anyway- take care.

Chat 124- Yes, I'm still here.

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch 124

Since the button isn't working for me,
here is the link:
(If you can lift the code for the button off an old chat, please feel free to.)

I hope you don't mind this chat with its missing button. Blogger refused to accept the HTML for the button. I decided to go ahead anyway, so we would not miss another chat.

Wendell says, "No button- no horse." I think he just wanted to stay in his pasture and stalk the grass. You never know when it will turn green. Probably not this week. We will be hit with snow before Tuesday morning. Monday temps were in the 50s. By mid-week, the weatherman said it will be 13 degrees. There will be wind. Put another log on the fire and warm up the tea kettle.

  1. How many seed catalogs have arrived at you home?
  2. Will you be learning to do something new this year?
  3. How many pair of boot do you own?(This can include casual, dressy, hiking, farm, riding, snow, or any other kind of boot.)
  4. Valentine's Day is just around the corner. There are decorations in the stores. Do you have anything planned for Valentine's Day?
  5. Please tell me your favorite breeds of dogs. If you don't like dogs, tell me something about a favorite animal. (Please. :)
My answers:
  1. I believe about 12.
  2. I want to learn monoprinting. I need to clean the old art studio and get to work!
  3. I have three pair of dress boots, a pair of riding boots that live with my daughter, and a pair of snow boots. The woman needs new Muck Boots for teh farm.
  4. I might bake something, but I have no other plans.
  5. Great Pyrenees, Bernese Mt. Dog, German Shepherd, Greyhound, Irish Wolfhound (I want one!).

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch 124 will be next week.

Hello, everyone.
I can't believe what wonderful friends Wendell and I have on this blog. You have been so tolerant of my missed posts and other issues that have occurred since my computer went down. It tanked again the end of last week. I had only visited the first ten people who came to the chat. To everyone else, I apologize. We thought it was a fan problem with the computer, but it seems to be the battery/power cord. I know that sounds simple, but it was a while to figure it out. I'm fortunate that my ultra techie friend has been the only one to look at the computer this round <read that it has not cost me anything, unless you count frustration>.

I am on a borrowed family computer. It hates me. I feel so unloved. Fortunately, Wendell is out playing in the mud and searching for the elusive blade of green grass. He would not like the way this computer makes one feel!

I should have the computer up and running with a new cord and battery by next week. Since this computer has blocked every attempt to put the chats button up, I am opting to wait until next week. I had trouble accessing email too. This computer has a mind of its own! Please come back next week.

Hugs, Patrice

Chat on the Farmhouse Porch 123

Hello! It's so good to have my computer working again. I hope all is well with you . I apologize to anyone who was unable to link up last week. Sorry, Tami! I have been getting a lot of spam linking to my chat. I deleted all the spam sights, and closed the linky. Sorry.

Everyday Ruralty
  1. How much baking did you do before and after Christmas? Do you get more inspired to bake when the temps are cooler?
  2. Do you have any food intolerances or allergies?
  3. When was the last time you were in a restaurant?
  4. What's your favorite accent(speech)?
  5. My favorite__________is__________.
My answers: (Don't forget me, Patrice. I have answers too!)
  1. I did a huge amount of baking before and after Christmas. So- I did a lot of munching. I tried to eat the broken cookies. I hear they have less calories. I always increase my baking in the fall and winter. Patrice won't let me cook in her kitchen. Selfish woman!
  2. Yes. Lots. I will spare you the list. It is actually longer than most novels. That is why I cook and eat at home. Yes. I cannot tolerate green lollipops. I'm not much on taffy either. Ik maksh miii theeth schtick togetter. Pfft!
  3. I was in one six days after Christmas to celebrate my sister's New Year's Eve birthday. In my dreams. The carrot cafe was the restaurant. Hmm? Such a lovely dream!
  4. UK. I am very fond of accents from all areas of the UK. I have an ear for accents and pick them up quite easily. I enjoy trying to sound like people I meet. I also enjoy hearing an Aussie accent. Baaaaa. I speak sheep.
  5. My favorite thing is waking up every morning and knowing that the Lord has given me another day with the people I love. My favorite outfit is my ballet tutu. Don't judge me!

Chat 122

Everyday Ruralty
Happy 2014! Sorry I couldn't get the chat going earlier, but I had to reintroduce myself to my computer. I hope you are all well. C.S.Farmer is preparing for some icy, cold weather. I'm crocheting an afghan, but that isn't exactly the same. :) We have lots of animals that need water and lines freeze easily with the low temps we are expecting. Brr.
Here are the questions for this week:
  1. Did you make any New Year's Resolutions?
  2. Are your decorations still up?
  3. What did Santa bring you? Okay, maybe not Santa...
  4. Do you have any special plans for 2014?
  5. Have you had any snow yet?
My answers: Mine too!
  1. No, but I have several goals for my art, writing, and ways of managing my home. I have just acknowledged these goals and thought of ways to achieve them. I see resolutions as something more severe. I have often felt like I failed, so I try not to make them. Yes. I resolve to eat more apples. I get so many carrots, that I think I need variety.
  2. Yes. As much as I'm itching to clean up, the family has requested leaving them up until Epiphany (Jan 6th). Patrice took our decoration away when we tried to eat it. Spoiled Sport!
  3. I got money for new clothes, a DSLR from my generous daughter, and a promise to help with family scrapbooks from another one of my girls. Did I mention chocolate? I'm still waiting for Santa.
  4. To finish house renovations before they finish me! To fulfill my dream of being a poet! To eat more. To tease Patrice more. To chase the pony less. To stop planning to chase the pony less, because I want to chase him more. :)
  5. We had 1/16th of an inch when we woke up this morning. We had a day, a few weeks ago, when it snowed like mad for about a half an hour. I'm sure we will get some of the white stuff. It was much more regular when I was younger, but the weather has gone binky. No. I don't like snow. I have never been able to build a snow horse. It gets my back wet when it melts. No snow for me!
The next chat will be on Tuesday. Just like they've always been. Have a good rest of the week.
