Chats on the Farmhouse Porch 78

Everyday Ruralty
Hello, friends! I'm so happy that we have new friends on the porch. I'm glad to see folks visiting each other. I try to visit everyone each week.
We're supposed to have a few warm days this week. I hope our pregnant ewes will take the opportunity to give birth on a nicer day. Murphy's Law says "no", but it sounds like a good idea to me. Our friend Wendell has somehow injured his front leg. That may just mean a few days rest in a stall. Hopefully, he'll feel better soon.
Questions
  1. Have you ever been on a boat? (Motor boat, sail boat, cruise ship, ark, or Good Ship Lollipop)
  2. Do you need an alarm to wake up in the morning, or do you wake up naturally? If you have an alarm, tell us what type.
  3. Have you ever had a yard sale?
  4. Do you like kitchen gadgets? What are some of your favorite?
  5. Do you read labels at the grocery store?
My answers:
  1. Yes. I have been on many boats. I grew up next to the water. My dad had a small motor boat and we'd go fishing, crabbing, and water skiing. I used to work at a sailing center when I was a teen, so I got invited to go sailing a few times each week. It was fun. I have also been on a cruise ship. NEVER go on a cruise ship booked by a high school graduating class. Fortunately, they had the cheap rooms below, so I tried to stay away from their activities. They were so rowdy!
  2. I married my alarm. On a funny note, I bought D3 an alarm clock with a goose face on it. When the alarm went off, it sounded like a screaming goose. She grew to hate it, but at first we thought it was really a good laugh.
  3. I had a yard sale a number of years ago. It was tons of work. We had to have it down near the road so we didn't have people wandering all over the farm. Would you believe people were stealing things from our yard sale? I knew what the stores felt like. Ah-ha! I sicked my MIL on them!!!
  4. I like kitchen gadgets within reason. There was never much need for them in the professional kitchens. Good knives, and good skills were more important. Every once in a while, I will buy something new for the kitchen, but most of my gadgets come from my sisters with the words "Oh, You just have to have one of these." My usual answer, "What the heck is it?" I guess with all those things they bring to me, I could have a yard sale!
  5. I read every label. we have four sets of food allergies, so I am a pro at labels.

  2. Love the thought of the goose alarm. Wish I could find one with a Rooster alarm. I would buy it for my son-in-law because he is a truck driver and says he gets up so early that he has to kick the rooster in the behind to wake it up. I am so blessed that we don't have food allergies, I imagine it is rough trying to buy foods and watch for allergies at the same time. Love yard sales. Can't wait till they start back up again.

  3. Great questions this week, Ms. Patrice. The weather here is quite warm, headed toward 60 today, after having an ice storm last Friday. More snow predicted for end of week....crazy weather. That's what it's like living in East Tennessee!! HOPE you have a great rest of the week!!!

  9. Well this is my first visit to The Porch! Thanks for inviting me. I tried to include the link that would connect you to the porch posting, but apparently with the title of my blog included, the number of letters were too long. So I just included the link to the blog generally.

Now off to see everyone's entries.

  10. I've never been sailing, but I bet it would be fun. I forgot to mention in my post that I've also been on a paddle boat at Oconee State Park in South Carolina. That was lots of fun. The canoe ride was another story. We were going in circles. :)

I'm sorry that Wendell has a boo-boo. How did he get hurt? I hope that he's going to be OK.

What did your MIL do to the yard sale thieves?

How many of your ewes are expecting? I hope that all goes well for them and for you. :)

    Have a great week!

  11. Oh I love your answers. Love the ferry to Victoria BC have done it twice. Alarm is in my head or cows mooing saying get out here and feed me. Yard sales are to much work and yes things disappear you may as well say free forget the sale part.. Kitchen stuff who knows:)

  12. The funny thing about boats, with me, is- the bigger the boat, the more likely I'll get sick. And this only happened after I had the lovelies. Go figure.

  13. My hubby is such a morning person. Me not so much, which is funny because I grew up on a farm. I also wanted to add that when you have children there is no need for an alarm. At least until they become teenagers and sleep way too much. :-)

  14. Thanks for hosting another Chat! I just love these! I have had people steal from our yard sales as well. So sad.

  15. Great answers, and I grew-up on the water, too! I'm such a sucker for gadgets, and I think that I probably need to sell about 25 % in a yard sale! :/

    Thanks for hosting!

  19. I've heard others complain about stealing at yard sales, and extreme haggling too. Items that are marked for $1.00 that folks want to pay $.05 for. C'mon people, be fair and realistic here! You're getting a bargain, remember?

As Alton Brown says, the only uni-tasker allowed in the kitchen should be the fire extinguisher. I like gadgets but I don't have space for very specific ones. They have to be able to multi-task.

    Have a blessed week!

  21. If I ever have another garage sale I am using that trick! My FIL loves to talk they will buy something just to get away from him! :)

  22. Patrice, that's one reason I won't have a yard sale...that and I don't want a bunch of hicks on my property. When I opened the farm to sheep shearing, I'd catch people going through my house. My MIL thought they'd come to see her and was giving 'em free rein! Finally, I had to shut and lock the driveway gate so people couldn't go through. I figured if they climbed the gate, I had a chance of seeing that.
I have a skim milk frother that I really like; it cuts down on my creamer addiction and I read labels because I try to limit the fake stuff I eat. I'm not a fan of fake.
