Chats on the Farmhouse Porch 10

Welcome to another visit on my porch! I love porches and tend to notice them when I drive by a house. Perhaps more so now that we have our weekly chats on a porch. I see the trees beginning to change colors. This is my favorite time of year.

Before my oldest daughter was born, I was required to have twelve weeks of complete bed rest to get her to a gestational week that would be safe. Towards  the end of those weeks, I had more doctors appointments than ever. I remember going to one, a few weeks after the last one. The leaves had changed into a full color display during that time. I remember walking out to the car and looking as though it was my first time to see colorful trees. As we made our way down a major road, I could see many trees and the colors were beautiful. I must have gone the whole way speechless, just taking in the view. (Me? Speechless? Must have been one heck of a view!! It certainly beat the four walls I'd seen for weeks on end!) I think of that every fall when the reds, yellows, oranges, greens, and browns decorate for the season. I hope you enjoy the best of this season.

  1. Would you rather cook or clean house?
  2. Who do you resemble in your family?
  3. Have you tried e-books yet?
  4. Do you collect anything?
  5. What's your favorite fall tradition?
My answers:
  1. I'd rather cook dinner for 500 than do any housecleaning. I love a clean house, but housework makes me crazy.
  2. My mom. I not only look like her, but I have her same crazy sense of humor.
  3. I was able to borrow a color Nook from our local library. They just started loaning them out. It was interesting. It was loaded with 53 non-fiction books. You can get them with Best Sellers, general fiction and many other categories. I found it a bit frustrating if I wanted to go back to look at something. It's much easier to leaf through a book. With that said, it would be very convenient for vacation or a business trip. One little leather covered "book" is much lighter than a huge stack. I do love real, paper books. I like the feel, the smell, the look, and the way they feel when you fall asleep curled up with them. I couldn't warm to an e-reader like that! I will try another one from the library. This time I will check out a Kindle. Hubby has one and he really likes it. This way I can get one loaded with books I might be interested in. I'm not running out to buy one though.
  4. I collect cobalt blue vases, but my collection has somehow morphed into cobalt plates, bowls, and a covered dish that looks like a chicken. I also have enough blue and white dishes that one could accuse me of collecting them too.
  5. Decorating with pumpkins is good, but baking apple pies would have to win! I also love the traditions of Thanksgiving. It means being with family and thanking God- both are good in my book. :)
Guess what we've been doing lately-

Yes. Harvesting sweet potatoes.
This is just one of many day's harvests of the gems. We planted LOTS of them this year. I like them baked, boiled, roasted, in cottage fries, in breads, as pie, as cake (with cream cheese frosting), and even in curries. I don't think I've ever had sweet potatoes prepared in a way I didn't like. What's your favorite way to eat sweet potatoes?

Enjoy the season and have a spectacular week!
Hey, Martha- that woman at Everyday Ruralty is improving her vocabulary, She's always wishing people a great weekend, a wonderful weekend, or a super weekend. She said "spectacular" this week.
Imagine that!
Maybe Wendell is teaching her some new, big words.

  1. hi wendell!

i like yams at thanksgiving, but not too sweet - not too much 'candy'. :)

i'd rather cook than clean, and i don't like to cook either.

i think these days i look like my next oldest sister.

    not a reader.

these days i collect too many blogs to read. i used to collect bird statues/duck decoys.

    fall tradition? gathering firewood.

  2. I prefer cooking over cleaning, especially if I am allowed to experiment. That doesn't happen often as there are picky folks living here. :)

I resemble both of my grandmothers. I'm almost a carbon copy of my maternal grandma physically, and very much like my paternal granny in attitude.

My husband has a Kindle, but I prefer real books for the same reasons that you've listed. Overall, real books are just more user-friendly, in my opinion. And they don't get dead batteries!

Yes, I collect angels and magazines.

Thanksgiving and all that comes with it!

  3. 1.I prefer cooking, with someone else doing the washing-up :)
    2. My mum.
    3. No - I prefer to hold a book.
    4. I collect elephants in all forms, except real ones.
    5. Kicking leaves :)

  4. I love baked sweet potatoes and sweet potato salad.

    I prefer cooking, by far.

    My Mom and daughters.

    Never tried an e book.

For some reason I end up collecting animals who need homes...

In the fall I love having fires in the kitchen wood stove...cozy.

  5. We haven't planted sweet potatoes yet, but I'm thinking maybe next year... I like them roasted, and you'll give me plenty tips on cooking them in loads of different ways... ;)

I've blogged my own porch chat, so my answers are there :)

    A x

  6. I love sweet potato pie! Looks like a good harvest to me.

  7. Wow, I'm impressed by your sweet potato harvest. I never planted sweet potatoes. I always wanted to grow them but never did. Maybe next year.

I love cleaning and cooking when I have enough time to do a good jog otherwise it's a pain.

I have both my mom and my dad's look.

I looked at my daughter's e-book but I prefer the real book that I can hold and turn pages.

I collect roosters, perennial flowers for my gardens, books, decorations for the different holidays, friends on Rug Hooking Daily and Followers on my blog.

I love sweet potato fries or in any way they are prepared I never tried them with the marshmallow and sugar.

Fall traditions is having the Church turkey suppers and Thanksgiving suppers with family and decorating for Halloween. JB

  8. Where's the linky thing? Here's my post: http://www.emptynest1.com/

That is the most awesome picture of Wendell! I love it! And sweet potatoes! And Patrice!:)

  9. Wow these are really good questions!
I love all of your wonderful sweet potatoes.
    They are so pretty.
    Thanks for the questions.

  10. I'm curious, have you done away with your linky? I love you questions this Wednesday! I'll see you next week, if not before then. Meanwhile, I hope you'll come by for a visit...

  11. Ack! I don't see your linky thingy! I did your questions, here's my link:

  12. Your sweet potatoes look great. My favorite way to eat them is simply baked and mashed with butter and (seasoning, maybe) salt. I don't like them baked up all sweet with brown sugar and marshmallows. I also make an awesome roasted sweet potato soup.

  13. Linking here, as there is no linky?

I love sweet potato roasted - but my friend just told me you can do a baked potato with them, and they are lovely?! Must try that!
