Patty Pan

I'm surprised with the number of people who ask me what Patty-Pan squash are and what to do with them. I resist the urge to tell them to wear them as a hat or play Frisbee with them.

These are "Sunburst" Patty Pan Squash

 This one looks like a sunflower that a small child made from Play-doh.

 They're all a bit different with coloring and shape.

 They look a bit less like space ships from the side.

 This is my favorite look for this type of summer squash.

My family loves them prepared this way!

Cheesy Patty Pan
  • Trim the stem and brown end on the other side.
  • Cut in half (across) so the two halves are about the same width.
  • Place, cut side down, in a pan with about an inch of water.
  • Bake at 350 for about a half an hour.
  • Drain water from pan. 
  • Turn the squash so the cut side is up.
  • Place cheese all over the top.
  • You can use any kind of cheese you like, with as much or little depending on how you feel about cheese.
  • Try small pieces of cooked bacon crumbled on top!
  • Enjoy!

  2. You know I wish I had known this recipe when I had patty-pan coming out of my ears.
    I never noticed they look kind of like a sunflower.
    I will let you hang out in the bathroom if you will cook patty-pan for me. :)

  4. I just cooked some up for dinner. Mine are white though. I fried them with pesto. The girls loved it.

  7. We have patty pan growing in our garden pot out back. Yes that was p-o-t, not plot! One plant with a few baby squash.
    I can't wait to try your cheesy recipe!
    Our favorite recipe is to slice the squash, saute it in butter with onion and then add crisp bacon pieces.

  9. This is the first I have seen of patty pan squash. I love squash...but haven't seen this one. I am going to be on the lookout for it and try out this recipe. Thanks for sharing!
